Tavernier’s departure brought an emotional end to one of the most significant chapters in Rangers’ recent history. After an incredible 11-year spell at the club, the experienced right-back officially brought his time at Ibrox to a close following the 2025/26 season. Rangers confirmed that Tavernier left after making a remarkable 565 appearances and scoring 144 goals for the club.
The English defender also spent eight years wearing the Rangers captain’s armband, leading the team through some of its most memorable modern moments. His time at the club included the Scottish Premiership title, domestic trophies and the unforgettable run to the UEFA Europa League final in Seville.
For many Rangers supporters, Tavernier’s departure was difficult to accept, particularly because of the enormous contribution he made during more than a decade in Glasgow. His leadership, goals from right-back and consistency made him one of the most recognisable figures of the modern Rangers era.
Although social-media posts and online rumours may create excitement about a possible return to Ibrox, there has been no official confirmation from Rangers that Tavernier has returned to the club.
Rangers have instead moved into a new chapter, with Lawrence Shankland named the club’s new men’s first-team captain, succeeding Tavernier.
Still, the affection for Tavernier remains enormous among the Rangers faithful. His legacy at Ibrox is secure, and any genuine announcement involving a return—whether as a player, ambassador or in another role—would undoubtedly attract major attention from supporters.
For now, the message from the Rangers family remains clear: James Tavernier may have left Ibrox, but his remarkable contribution to the club will not be forgotten.
