DEAL ACCEPTED: Sunderland Continue to Back Talented Attacking Midfielder Chris Rigg
Sunderland AFC continue to place their faith in one of English football’s most exciting young talents, Chris Rigg, as the 19-year-old midfielder remains an important part of the club’s plans.
Rigg, who was born in Hebburn, joined Sunderland’s academy as a youngster and progressed through the club’s youth system before making his senior debut. His technical ability, confidence on the ball and creativity in attacking areas have made him one of the standout products of Sunderland’s academy.
The talented midfielder has also attracted attention beyond Wearside over the years, with several major clubs previously linked with an interest in his services. However, Rigg committed his future to Sunderland by signing a new long-term contract in 2024.
Since breaking into the first team, Rigg has continued to develop his game. His performances have demonstrated his ability to operate between midfield and attack, while his passing, movement and willingness to take on defenders have made him an exciting player for Sunderland supporters.
One of his memorable performances came in Sunderland’s 2–1 victory over Newcastle United at St James’ Park in March 2026. Rigg produced an impressive all-round display, including three key passes and strong attacking distribution.
Rigg has also continued to feature around Sunderland’s first-team squad during the 2026–27 campaign. Current statistical records list him as a Sunderland player, with the midfielder making appearances during the early stages of the new season.
For Sunderland, retaining and developing young talents such as Rigg represents an important part of the club’s long-term strategy. With Premier League football and European competition providing a bigger stage, the teenager has an opportunity to continue his development at the Stadium of Light.
Sunderland fans will therefore be hoping that Chris Rigg can maintain his progress, establish himself as a regular first-team starter and become one of the leading young midfielders of his generation.
The future looks bright for Rigg—and Sunderland will be determined to make sure his next chapter is written in red and white.
