A major story is circulating among Leeds United supporters claiming that captain Ethan Ampadu could step down from his leadership role at Elland Road.
However, there has been no official confirmation from Leeds United or Ampadu that he has resigned the captaincy. The latest official information actually points in the opposite direction, with the club confirming in June 2026 that Ampadu had signed a new contract keeping him at Leeds until 2030.
Ampadu has become an important figure at Leeds since joining from Chelsea in 2023. He was handed the captain’s armband and played a key role during Leeds’ successful Championship campaign before continuing to lead the side in the Premier League.
Several possible explanations could fuel speculation about a change in leadership, including the demands of captaincy, the pressure of competing in the Premier League and the possibility of the club wanting to share leadership responsibilities within the squad.
Nevertheless, these remain speculation rather than confirmed reasons.
For now, Leeds supporters should treat reports of Ampadu stepping down as unverified. The most recent official information available still identifies him as Leeds United’s captain.
