IT IS OVER: Bruno Guimarães’ Newcastle Captaincy Comes to an End — Here’s What Happened

Newcastle United supporters have officially witnessed the end of the Bruno Guimarães era at St James’ Park, with the Brazilian midfielder no longer serving as the club’s captain following his move to Arsenal.

Guimarães had become one of Newcastle’s most important players since joining the club from Lyon in 2022. His performances and leadership made him a major figure among supporters, and he was named Newcastle’s Player of the Year for the 2025/26 season after recording nine Premier League goals and eight assists.

However, his time as Newcastle captain came to an end during a dramatic summer transfer window. Arsenal agreed a reported £75 million fee with Newcastle for the midfielder, with Guimarães subsequently completing his move to the Gunners.

Why did Guimarães leave?

Reports surrounding the transfer indicated that Guimarães was determined to join Arsenal. Newcastle sporting director Ross Wilson later acknowledged that losing the Brazilian was particularly disappointing for the club, although Newcastle had to move forward with a major squad transition.

His departure also came during a major period of change at Newcastle. Eddie Howe left his position as head coach, while other established players also departed during the summer.

Dan Burn takes over the armband

Following Guimarães’ departure, Newcastle appointed experienced defender Dan Burn as the club’s new captain ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

Newcastle officially announced Burn’s appointment on 15 August 2026. The club described the 34-year-old as a natural leader with a strong connection to Newcastle and the local community.

Burn now faces the responsibility of leading Newcastle into a new era under head coach Matthias Jaissle.

The end of an era

For Newcastle supporters, Guimarães’ departure represents more than the loss of another midfielder. He had become a central figure in the club’s recent rise and played a significant role in Newcastle’s 2025 League Cup triumph.

Although he is no longer wearing the Newcastle captain’s armband, his contribution during his time at St James’ Park will remain an important part of the club’s recent history.
