Manly Sea Eagles captain Daly Cherry-Evans was reportedly involved in a tragic road accident earlier today that claimed the life of an elderly man.

According to preliminary reports, the incident occurred late this morning near Brookvale, close to the Sea Eagles’ training facility. Authorities say Cherry-Evans’ vehicle struck an 81-year-old man in a wheelchair who was crossing a designated pedestrian area.

Emergency services arrived within minutes, but despite the efforts of paramedics, the elderly man succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Cherry-Evans, 36, remained at the location and cooperated fully with police investigators. He was described as “deeply distressed” following the accident.

A spokesperson for New South Wales Police confirmed that investigations are ongoing but emphasized that no charges have been laid at this stage. “Officers are examining CCTV footage and speaking with witnesses to determine the full circumstances of the collision,” the spokesperson said.

The Manly Sea Eagles released a brief statement expressing their condolences to the victim’s family and confirming that Cherry-Evans is assisting authorities.

“Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the family of the man who tragically lost his life today,” the club said. “Daly is cooperating fully with police as they continue their investigation.”

Cherry-Evans, one of the NRL’s most respected and longest-serving captains, has led the Sea Eagles since 2017 and represented both Queensland and Australia in international competition.

Friends and teammates have described him as “devastated” and “heartbroken” over the incident.

Police have urged any witnesses or motorists with dashcam footage from the area to come forward as part of their continuing inquiry.
