Gordon, one of the most accomplished players in Badgers history, shared that while he respects the decisions being made in Madison, he’s still trying to fully understand McIntosh’s long-term vision for the program.

Gordon noted that Wisconsin has always been known for its identity—strong offensive lines, power running, and disciplined defense. “That’s what made us who we are,” Gordon said. “You knew what to expect from a Wisconsin team. We were going to run the ball, wear you down, and play physical football.” However, he admitted that with Fickell’s arrival and the transition to a more modern, spread-style offense, things have looked very different.

Luke Fickell, who took over the program in late 2022, has worked to modernize Wisconsin’s offense, bringing in new assistants and implementing schemes that emphasize tempo and passing. While the results have been mixed at times, McIntosh has publicly stood by Fickell’s vision, emphasizing the need to adapt to the evolving college football landscape.

Gordon expressed that he understands the desire to compete with the elite programs across the country but also feels some nostalgia for the old Wisconsin identity. “I get it—you want to win big games and recruit top guys,” he said. “But it’s tough to see such a big shift from what made us special. I just hope it all comes together the way they’re planning.”

Despite his reservations, Gordon made it clear that his comments come from a place of love and loyalty. He remains a proud Badger and said he’s rooting for Fickell to succeed. “I know Coach Fickell is a great coach. I’ve talked to players in the program, and they believe in what he’s doing,” Gordon added. “At the end of the day, all I want is for Wisconsin football to be great again.”

McIntosh and Fickell have both emphasized that their shared goal is to maintain Wisconsin’s winning tradition while also positioning the team for long-term success in the Big Ten’s changing landscape.
