In an inspiring act of leadership both on and off the field, Penrith Panthers captain and star halfback Nathan Cleary has announced a $5.6 million personal investment to convert one of his privately owned properties into a state-of-the-art shelter for homeless and at-risk youth.
Cleary revealed the initiative at a press conference earlier today, stating that the project has been in development for more than a year. The renovated property—located in Western Sydney—will be transformed into a 24/7 supported living facility offering emergency accommodation, mental-health services, education support, and long-term transition programs.
A Vision Rooted in Community
Cleary spoke candidly about the motivation behind the project, noting that he has witnessed both the resilience and the struggles of young people growing up in the region.
“Rugby league has given me so much, and I’ve always believed the best way to repay that is by investing back into the community,” Cleary said. “No young person should feel alone, unsafe, or without a future. If this shelter gives them stability and hope, then it’s worth every cent.”
The shelter will operate in partnership with several youth-support organisations and local social-service providers. According to project coordinators, the facility will include 20 individual living spaces, communal areas, counselling rooms, and a dedicated learning hub.
Community Leaders Praise the Initiative
Local community leaders and youth advocates applauded Cleary’s commitment, describing the project as one of the most significant privately funded youth-support initiatives in the region.
Penrith mayoral representatives expressed gratitude, stating that Cleary’s contribution “goes beyond philanthropy—it sets a powerful example for athletes and public figures nationwide.”
Players and Clubs Rally Behind the Project
Panthers teammates took to social media to support their captain, with many praising him for embodying the values he displays on the field.
Head coach Ivan Cleary described the initiative as “a proud moment for the club,” adding that Nathan has “always been passionate about helping young people and giving them the foundations to succeed.”
Facility to Open in Coming Months
Construction teams have already commenced major renovations, with the shelter scheduled to open its doors within the next several months. Organisers expect to serve hundreds of youths each year through both emergency housing and long-term development programs.
Cleary concluded his announcement by emphasising that this project is only the beginning.
“I hope this encourages more conversations, more action, and more support for the young people who need it most,” he said. “This community has always lifted me up. Now it’s my turn to help lift others.”
