The race for the Queensland Maroons’ iconic No.1 jersey is officially on, with the fullback position still unconfirmed heading into the 2026 State of Origin campaign. As anticipation builds across the rugby league world, several elite contenders are emerging in what shapes as one of the biggest selection calls of the year.
Queensland Maroons selectors are expected to closely monitor early-season NRL form before locking in their backline, and the competition for the custodian role is already fierce.
Reece Walsh looms as the frontrunner. The electric Broncos star has proven himself on the big stage and, when fit, offers game-breaking speed, flair and confidence. His combination of attacking instinct and Origin experience gives him a strong early edge in the conversation.
