In a historic collaboration, Netflix, ESPN Films, and Guinness World Records have announced production of a new, definitive documentary exploring the extraordinary career of Ken Griffey Jr., the beloved Seattle Mariners legend widely hailed as one of baseball’s greatest players.

Titled “Junior: The Perfect Swing”, the multi-part series promises to offer the most comprehensive and intimate portrait yet of Griffey’s meteoric rise, his era-defining swing, and the lasting cultural impact he made on Major League Baseball (MLB).

Slated for release on Netflix in early 2026, the project will feature exclusive interviews with Griffey himself, former teammates, rivals, coaches, family members, and celebrities who were inspired by his brilliance on the diamond. ESPN Films will co-produce the project, lending its signature 30 for 30-style storytelling to the production, while Guinness World Records will certify and document the many records and milestones that solidify Griffey’s place in baseball history.

A Legacy Beyond the Numbers

Ken Griffey Jr. was more than just an All-Star—he was an icon who captivated fans with his smooth swing, acrobatic defense, and electric personality. Over 22 MLB seasons, “The Kid” smashed 630 career home runs, won 10 Gold Gloves, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2016 with one of the highest voting percentages ever.

The documentary will dive into signature moments like Griffey’s back-to-back Home Run Derby victories, his legendary 1995 ALDS performance, and the father-son dynamic with Ken Griffey Sr. that delivered some of baseball’s most unforgettable memories.

Producers Promise Unprecedented Access

Netflix and ESPN say they aim to go deeper than any previous biography of Griffey. The project will feature never-before-seen footage, personal home videos, and behind-the-scenes stories from the Mariners, Reds, and White Sox chapters of his career.

“Ken Griffey Jr. transformed the game, inspired a generation, and changed the way baseball was marketed and loved,” said an ESPN Films spokesperson. “This documentary will honor his achievements on and off the field.”

Guinness World Records Joins the Team

In a unique twist, Guinness World Records will play an active role in the series, certifying records related to Griffey’s home run feats, All-Star selections, and fan accolades. The production will highlight how Griffey’s fame transcended baseball, from video games to sneakers to a generational cultural influence.

Fans React with Excitement

News of the project immediately sparked buzz among baseball fans, who took to social media to celebrate the long-awaited deep dive into Griffey’s story. Many hailed it as overdue recognition for one of the game’s most charismatic and talented superstars.
