In a heartwarming move that’s already making waves across the sports and philanthropic communities, former Baltimore Orioles star pitcher Mike Mussina has announced a personal investment of $8.7 million to transform vacant homes in Baltimore into safe shelters for homeless and at-risk youth.

The initiative, dubbed “Home Base Baltimore,” will begin by renovating over two dozen abandoned row houses across the city. The goal: to provide long-term housing, mentorship, mental health support, and career development opportunities for young people struggling with homelessness.

> “I’ve always felt a strong connection to Baltimore, and it’s time to give back in a way that truly matters,” Mussina said during a press conference Tuesday morning. “Every child deserves a safe place to sleep, a path forward, and someone who believes in them.”

The project is a joint effort with local nonprofits, housing authorities, and youth advocates. Construction on the first set of homes is expected to begin in late August, with the first group of youth moving in early 2026.

Community leaders have praised Mussina’s move as a game-changer for Baltimore.

Mussina, a Hall of Famer known for his consistency on the mound and integrity off it, played for the Orioles from 1991 to 2000. Even in retirement, his legacy continues to grow — not just through baseball, but now through compassion.
