In a surprising and bold move, the Chicago Blackhawks have announced the hiring of former Detroit Red Wings head coach Jeff Blashill, signaling a major shift in direction as the franchise continues its rebuild. Blashill returns to Chicago, where he previously held a coaching role with the AHL’s Rockford IceHogs, the Blackhawks’ minor league affiliate, over a decade ago.
Blashill, 51, is best known for his seven-season tenure as head coach of the Detroit Red Wings (2015–2022). While his time in Detroit included some challenging rebuild years, Blashill earned praise for his development of young talent and his steady leadership through a turbulent era for the historic franchise.
The Blackhawks’ decision to bring him aboard comes amid a renewed focus on player development and culture-building, particularly around young stars like Connor Bedard. Sources within the organization say Blashill’s experience working with rebuilding teams and his familiarity with the Midwest hockey landscape made him a top candidate.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Jeff back to the Blackhawks organization,” said GM Kyle Davidson in a statement. “His track record with developing players, strong communication, and resilience under pressure make him the right person to lead this next phase of our team’s evolution.”
Blashill will replace interim coach Derek King, who stepped in midseason following the team’s dismissal of Luke Richardson. The Blackhawks finished the 2024–25 season outside the playoff picture but showed promising signs of growth late in the year.
