In the wake of a major reorganization led by newly reinstated AFL executive Andrew Dillon, Collingwood Football Club president Barry Carp has broken his silence with pointed remarks directed at AFL Commission chairman Richard Goyder.
Speaking candidly after the reshuffle, Carp expressed concern about the league’s direction under Goyder’s extended tenure. “There’s a growing disconnect between the clubs and the Commission,” Carp stated. “We’ve respected Richard’s leadership for a long time, but there comes a point where fresh vision is not just welcome—it’s essential.”
Dillon’s return has already sparked considerable movement within the league’s administrative ranks, including a revised strategic roadmap and personnel changes at key levels. While Carp acknowledged Dillon’s experience and stability, he emphasized that long-standing governance issues still need to be addressed.
“This isn’t just about who sits in the executive chair,” Carp continued. “It’s about transparency, club input, and ensuring the AFL evolves in step with its communities, not behind them.”
Though Goyder has not yet responded publicly, insiders suggest growing pressure from several club leaders who believe the AFL must transition to more collaborative leadership.
