BREAKING NEWS: Excitements Hit at Paycom Center as former Oklahoma City Thunder legend Russell Westbrook, has Returned to his former team as a senior coaching…see more..

The heart of Oklahoma City basketball beats a little louder today as former Thunder superstar and NBA icon Russell Westbrook has officially returned to his former team — this time, not as a player, but in a powerful new role as Senior Coaching Advisor.

Announced early this morning by Thunder General Manager Sam Presti, the news was met with an overwhelming wave of excitement across social media and the local fanbase. The Paycom Center, home of the Oklahoma City Thunder, is already buzzing with anticipation.

A Hero’s Return

Westbrook, known for his relentless energy, explosive athleticism, and unmatched loyalty during his 11-year tenure with the Thunder, left an indelible mark on the franchise. Drafted in 2008, Westbrook became the face of the team after Kevin Durant’s departure and was named the league’s MVP in 2017 after a historic triple-double season.

Though he moved on to play with several teams — including the Rockets, Wizards, Lakers, and most recently the Clippers — Oklahoma City never forgot its most dynamic playmaker.

Today’s announcement brings that chapter full circle.

> “Russell Westbrook embodies the spirit and competitive fire we value in Oklahoma City,” said Presti during the press conference. “His return in a leadership role adds invaluable insight and passion to our young roster.”

Guiding the Next Generation

As a Senior Coaching Advisor, Westbrook will work closely with Head Coach Mark Daigneault and the Thunder’s developmental staff, with a special focus on mentoring young guards such as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Josh Giddey, and Cason Wallace.

Sources close to the organization say Westbrook will also assist in player development, culture building, and in-game strategy, bringing the same intensity to the sidelines that he once brought to the court.

> “This city raised me,” said Westbrook in a heartfelt statement. “It’s an honor to come back and help build the next generation of Thunder greatness. I’m not done impacting the game — just doing it in a different way now.”

Fan Reaction: Pure Thunder

Fans wasted no time expressing their excitement. The hashtag #WelcomeBackRuss quickly began trending on X (formerly Twitter), with tributes, video highlights, and messages of support pouring in.

“Russ coming back to OKC just feels right,” wrote one fan. “This man gave us everything. Now he’s going to shape the future.”

Thunder season ticket holders were already lining up at the team store this morning, hoping to grab the newly released Westbrook coaching staff gear.

A New Era Begins

While Westbrook’s playing days may be winding down, his love for Oklahoma City — and its love for him — is clearly still going strong. His return not only bridges the past and present but also sends a clear message: the Thunder are building a future rooted in their legacy.

As the 2025-2026 NBA season draws closer, all eyes will be on Oklahoma City — not just for the emerging young talent on the court, but for the legend on the sidelines helping shape it.
