BREAKING NEWS: Rick Carlisle Sends Shocking Message to Jason Kidd and the Dallas Mavericks
August 4, 2025 | Dallas, TX — In an unexpected turn of events, former Dallas Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle, who now hosts a growing podcast and has become increasingly active in sports media, has sent a blunt and shocking message to current Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd and the entire Dallas organization.
Carlisle, who coached the Mavericks from 2008 to 2021 and led the team to its only NBA Championship in 2011, made headlines during the latest episode of his podcast “Court Vision with Rick Carlisle”. In the explosive segment, Carlisle addressed what he called “a worrying trend” in the Mavericks’ team culture, preparation, and leadership structure.
“This isn’t personal,” Carlisle said during the episode. “But I’m seeing patterns in Dallas that we fought hard to eliminate during my tenure. Lack of defensive urgency, questionable late-game decisions, and a failure to maximize Luka Dončić’s prime years—it’s frustrating to watch.”
Carlisle stopped short of directly criticizing Kidd’s coaching, but the message was clear.
“When you’ve got a generational talent like Luka, you build around him intelligently and urgently,” he continued. “You don’t waste seasons trying to ‘figure it out.’ This isn’t a rebuilding team. It’s supposed to be a contender.”
Sources close to the Mavericks organization say the remarks “caught some people off guard” and may spark internal discussions behind closed doors. Kidd has yet to respond publicly.
Carlisle’s message also appeared to include advice for Mavericks ownership and front office leadership, urging them to “get serious” about winning now.
“Dallas is not just a market—it’s a legacy. If this team underachieves again, it’s not just on the coach. It’s on the entire structure.”
Carlisle, now the head coach of the Indiana Pacers, has largely kept his commentary on Dallas respectful since his departure in 2021. However, this marks the first time he has publicly questioned the team’s direction under Kidd.
Whether this is a one-time outburst or the beginning of a longer media narrative remains to be seen. One thing is clear: Rick Carlisle isn’t staying silent anymore.
