Netflix has officially announced the upcoming release of The UnderDog, a highly anticipated documentary chronicling the life and career of Baltimore Orioles icon Cal Ripken Jr—famously known as “The Iron Man.” The streaming giant confirmed the film will premiere globally on August 15.
The UnderDog promises an in-depth and emotional look at Ripken’s journey from a young, underestimated prospect to one of Major League Baseball’s most revered figures. Known for shattering Lou Gehrig’s unbreakable record by playing 2,632 consecutive games, Ripken embodied grit, consistency, and humility—values the film aims to spotlight like never before.
Netflix says the documentary features never-before-seen footage, exclusive interviews with Ripken himself, former teammates, rivals, family members, and baseball legends. It also delves into his upbringing in Maryland, his leadership during the Orioles’ resurgence in the 1990s, and his lasting impact on the game.
“Cal Ripken Jr. wasn’t just an incredible baseball player; he was the epitome of perseverance and integrity,” said the film’s director, Marissa Chen. “We wanted to show the man behind ‘The Iron Man’—his fears, his family, his relentless work ethic.
