In a move that’s already igniting excitement across the sports and entertainment world, Netflix has officially announced the release date of “The UnderDog,” a powerful new documentary chronicling the life, rise, and legacy of Oklahoma Sooners basketball legend and NBA All-Star Blake Griffin.

Set to premiere August 25, the film promises an intimate, never-before-seen look into Griffin’s journey—from his humble beginnings in Oklahoma City to his electric college career with the Sooners, and ultimately, to NBA superstardom.

“The UnderDog” traces Blake’s early days playing with his brother Taylor at Oklahoma Christian School, his breakout years at the University of Oklahoma, and his meteoric rise as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft. Viewers will also see the personal side of Griffin—his battles with injuries, his reinvention as a team leader in the NBA, and his philanthropic efforts in Norman and beyond.

Blake Griffin’s story is about more than dunks and highlights—it’s about grit, heart, and staying true to who you are,” said Netflix executive producer Lauren Harris. “We’re proud to bring this inspiring story to millions of fans around the world.”

The documentary will include:

Exclusive interviews with Blake Griffin, his family, college coach Jeff Capel, former Sooners teammates, and NBA peers

Behind-the-scenes footage from his 2008–09 National Player of the Year season at OU

Never-before-seen clips of Griffin’s rehab and off-court battles

Reflections on his impact at Oklahoma, including the dedication of the Griffin Family Performance Center

Coach Jennie Baranczyk and Athletic Director Joe Castiglione praised the documentary’s timing, calling it a “celebration of one of the greatest Sooners to ever wear the crimson and cream.”

Social media exploded with reactions from fans and former players as the trailer dropped online, with the hashtag #TheUnderDog trending across platforms.

> “I’ve waited for this moment for years,” wrote one user on X. “Blake Griffin defined OU basketball for a generation. Let’s gooo!”

The documentary’s release also comes amid speculation that Griffin may take on a more active role with the Oklahoma athletic program in the future, following his retirement from the NBA earlier this year.
