A Vision for Lasting Change
The initiative, dubbed “Winfield House Project,” is expected to break ground later this year in the southeastern corridor of San Diego. It will include:
- 150 permanent supportive housing units with access to mental health services and job training
- 300 temporary shelter beds designed to transition individuals into longer-term stability
- A community center offering food, counseling, and educational programs
- Partnerships with Padres players and alumni for ongoing mentorship and volunteer work
Mayor Todd Gloria called the gift “one of the most impactful private donations in San Diego’s history,” and praised Winfield for “living the values that sports figures often talk about.”
More Than Baseball
Winfield, who was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001 and remains a revered figure in Padres history, has long been involved in charitable efforts. But this gesture, many say, marks a defining moment in his post-baseball legacy.
“Dave Winfield gave everything he had on the field — now he’s giving everything off it,” said Padres CEO Erik Greupner.
