Breaking News: Rick Pitino Declines Interest in Knicks Coaching Position
In a decisive statement, Rick Pitino, current head coach of St. John’s University, has firmly rejected any interest in returning to the NBA as head coach of the New York Knicks. During a Yankees-Guardians game broadcast, Pitino responded with a blunt “Absolutely not” when asked about the possibility of coaching the Knicks .
Pitino’s comments come in the wake of the Knicks’ surprising decision to part ways with head coach Tom Thibodeau, despite his successful tenure, which included guiding the team to their first Eastern Conference Finals appearance in 25 years . The Knicks have not reached the NBA Finals since 1999, and Pitino cited the immense pressure on the next coach to deliver a championship as a significant deterrent.
At 72, Pitino has revitalized his coaching career at St. John’s, leading the team to a 31-5 record and earning national and Big East Coach of the Year honors . He has expressed a desire to remain in college basketball, stating his focus is on developing teams and players, rather than seeking control or front-office roles
While Pitino has ruled out a return to the Knicks, the team’s search for a new head coach continues, with other candidates under consideration.
