The Boston Celtics fanbase is erupting with joy as head coach Joe Mazzulla officially announced that superstar small forward Jayson Christopher Tatum will be the new captain of the storied franchise.

The announcement came during a team meeting at the Auerbach Center early Monday morning and was met with thunderous applause from teammates and staff alike. Mazzulla, who led the Celtics to the 2024 NBA Finals, praised Tatum’s leadership both on and off the court, calling him “the heart and soul of this team.”

“This is a responsibility Jayson has earned,” Mazzulla stated. “He’s not just one of the best players in the world — he’s a role model, a motivator, and a Celtic through and through.”

A Natural Evolution for the Franchise’s Star

Tatum, 27, has spent his entire NBA career with the Celtics since being drafted third overall in 2017. Over the years, he has grown into a five-time All-Star, an All-NBA First Team selection, and the face of the franchise. Now, he steps into the captaincy following Al Horford’s transition to a veteran mentoring role in what is likely his final NBA season.

“It’s a dream come true,” Tatum said during a press conference. “This organization means everything to me. To be named captain — to follow legends like Bill Russell, Paul Pierce, and others — is truly humbling.”

Praise From Around the League

The news has sent waves through the NBA community. Players, coaches, and former Celtics legends have taken to social media to celebrate the announcement.

Former captain Paul Pierce tweeted:

“This is the moment. Tatum’s time. Proud of you, young fella. Lead with pride.”

Meanwhile, Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens called the move “an easy decision that reflects where this team is heading.”

Setting the Tone for a Championship Run

With the 2025–26 NBA season approaching, the Celtics are poised for another deep playoff run, boasting a reloaded roster featuring Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Jrue Holiday, and Kristaps Porziņģis. Team chemistry and leadership will be key — and having Tatum at the helm solidifies that foundation.

Fans gathered outside TD Garden today waving jerseys and chanting “Captain Tatum,” while murals of him have already begun appearing across Boston neighborhoods.
