The Vancouver Canucks have locked down their franchise cornerstone in style. Star defenseman and captain Quinn Hughes has officially signed a 4-year, $53 million contract extension that will keep him in Vancouver through the 2028–29 NHL season.
The deal includes a staggering $49.65 million signing bonus and is fully guaranteed, cementing Hughes as one of the highest-paid defensemen in NHL history. His new contract carries an average annual value (AAV) of $13.25 million, giving the Canucks long-term stability on their blue line while sending a clear signal of their championship ambitions.
> General Manager Patrik Allvin said in a statement:
“Quinn is the heartbeat of our team, our captain, and one of the most talented defensemen in the league. Securing his future in Vancouver was our top priority. This deal reflects our belief in him as a leader and a game-changer.”
Since making his debut in 2019, Hughes has redefined the role of an offensive defenseman in Vancouver. Last season he put up a career-best 76 points in 68 games, earning a second consecutive Norris Trophy finalist nod. Fans also voted him the Babe Pratt Trophy winner (awarded to the team’s best defenseman) for the sixth straight year.
Hughes expressed excitement about the extension, saying:
> “Vancouver is home. I love this city, these fans, and this group of guys in the room. I want to win here. That’s what this is all about.”
The Canucks will now build around their elite blueliner for the foreseeable future, with management reportedly planning to use their remaining cap space to add scoring depth and shore up the defense ahead of training camp.
