Gasso, who has led the Sooners since 1995, transformed Oklahoma into a dynasty, capturing multiple NCAA national championships, producing dozens of All-Americans, and elevating the program to the pinnacle of collegiate softball. Her decision to step down brings an emotional close to a career defined by excellence, integrity, and a relentless commitment to winning.

The University of Oklahoma athletic department confirmed the news late Thursday, stating that Gasso submitted her resignation earlier in the week and that an official press conference will follow to address the transition and future of the program.

“After nearly three decades of pouring my heart into this program, I’ve decided it’s time to step away and begin a new chapter,” Gasso wrote in her resignation letter. “Coaching at Oklahoma has been the greatest honor of my life. The memories, the championships, and most importantly, the people — they’ve made every moment worth it.”

Throughout her tenure, Gasso built a legacy that few in any sport can match. Under her leadership, the Sooners captured seven national titles, including an unprecedented run of three consecutive championships in recent seasons. She developed Oklahoma into a powerhouse known for dominant pitching, clutch hitting, and unshakeable team chemistry.

Athletic Director Joe Castiglione expressed deep gratitude and admiration for Gasso’s contributions.

“Patty Gasso is more than a coach — she’s an icon,” Castiglione said. “Her impact on this university, our athletes, and the sport of softball is immeasurable. She built a standard of excellence that will continue to inspire generations.”

Players, past and present, flooded social media with emotional tributes, many referring to Gasso as a “second mother” and “the foundation of Oklahoma softball.”

Senior captain Jayda Coleman shared,

“Coach Gasso changed our lives. She believed in us, pushed us, and taught us how to win — not just in softball, but in life. There will never be another like her.”

While Gasso has not yet announced her future plans, sources close to the program suggest she may remain involved in the sport in an advisory or mentoring capacity, potentially helping to shape the next generation of coaches.

As the Sooners begin the search for her successor, one thing remains certain — Patty Gasso’s legacy will forever be etched in the heart of Oklahoma athletics.

Her departure marks the end of an era, but also a celebration of one of the greatest coaching careers in collegiate history.
