Boston Bruins Star Defenseman Charlie McAvoy Donates Entire $53.1 Million Bonus and Sponsorship Earnings to Homeless Shelter in Metro Knicks, Funds 150 Units of Housing with 300 Shelter Beds
In a jaw-dropping act of generosity that has stunned both the sports world and humanitarian circles, Boston Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy announced today that he is donating his entire $53.1 million in recent bonus and sponsorship earnings to combat homelessness in the Metro Knicks region, a historically underserved area in need of permanent housing and shelter infrastructure.
The donation will fully fund the development of 150 affordable housing units and 300 emergency shelter beds, in partnership with the New England Housing Collective and the Metro Knicks Community Alliance.
“Hockey has given me everything,” McAvoy said at a press conference at TD Garden. “It’s time I give something back — not just to Boston, but to the people who need it most.”
The Bruins star, who signed a lucrative contract extension last year, has long been involved in community service, but this donation marks an unprecedented scale of giving — not just for an NHL player, but for professional athletes in general.
The initiative, dubbed “Project Home-Ice”, aims to break ground later this fall and complete construction by early 2027. In addition to housing, the complex will include a community center, mental health support services, a job training hub, and even a small indoor rink “so kids in the shelter can dream big,” McAvoy added with a grin.
“More than just a player.”
Team president Cam Neely praised McAvoy’s decision, calling him “more than just a player — he’s a builder of futures.” Fellow Bruins teammates have also begun pledging smaller donations to support wraparound services at the site.
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu called the act “a miracle wrapped in hockey tape,” and confirmed that the city will expedite permitting and provide additional municipal funding to ensure the project’s success.
